Jack Davis was such a huge inspiration to me growing up. I read the EC reprints voraciously, saw his work all over advertising, and in Creepy/Eerie, not to mention his amazing contributions to MAD. He was in his nineties, so I knew it was only a matter of time before this happened; I knew one day I'd open up my laptop and read that Davis had passed away. So it's not as hard as it might be otherwise, as I'd been thinking about this day for at least four years now.
Still, the man was such an inspiration to me. I guarantee, I would not draw the way I do without him. Maybe if I didn't draw this way, I'd have gotten my work on the wall at college more, or have more watchers on dA, but I wouldn't trade his influence for the world. His work is gorgeous and will live on forever. God bless you Jack Davis, I wouldn't be the man I am today without your work, both in humor and in horror.
Please honor the man by reading this short humor strip he illustrated, from MAD number one (it's written by Harvey Kurtzman): http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?
