well now it seems that if Sonic Boom is made they will make either a movie after the series starts or the series Sonic Boom has been cancelled for it too be converted into a Movie with the same name...but that's just my guess, but it may be just to release Sonic the Movie DVDs you guys know the one...Sonic vs Metal Sonic because not many of those DVDs were made actually

Sega Allegedly Financing “Dark, Edgy Version Skewed Towards Older Audiences”


If you thought Sonic Boom was huge, this has enormous potential to further shift the Sonic landscape if it pans out. We direct you to a report from reputable Hollywood insider site The Tracking Board, which reported exclusively yesterday about plans for a Sonic film with Sega on board to finance:

It’s recently been confirmed that a movie adaptation of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is in development at Columbia Pictures, with the studio going for a dark, edgy version skewed towards older audiences! NOT ONLY this, but the studio plans to make it a mix of live-action and animation, allowing the much loved character to really meld with reality.

[....]Original Films and SEGA are onboard to finance, with Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher producing. Samuel Dickerman, Hannah Minghella, and Foster Driver are overseeing the project as executives at Columbia.

The only thing to do now is find a writer for the project, and an awesome shortlist has already been put together with some real heavy hitters:

Brad Bird (“Incredibles, “”Wall-E,” “Brave,” “Toy Story 2,” “Up”)
Wernick & Reese (“Deadpool,” “Monsters Inc,” “Zombieland,” “GI Joe Retaliation”)
David Berenbaum (“The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Elf”)
Phil Johnston (“Wreck it Ralph” and “Nebraska”)
Sonic has a long history, as it’s been adapted for the small screen numerous times in the past – once as an animated movie (1996) and once as an animated television series (1993). This project currently in development, however, will bring an entirely new edge to the story, revealing the darker side of the blue hedgehog. It’s a smart move by Columbia, as many fans of the original game are now into their late 20′s to early 30′s, and would need a stronger draw to get them into the theater. It also allows relatively new fans to join in – those who only know Sonic from the new Nintendo Wii versions or their Android/iPhone devices. Someone at Columbia is either a huge fan of the hedgehog themselves, or they just have a really good sense of the current market. Either way we are not complaining, as the movie could be a really big hit if development continues in this direction.

We are, for the moment, treating this as RUMOR, though given the media avenues Sonic Boom aims to conquer, it is a little puzzling why the silver screen was left out of the equation. This project would fill that void. Sega has been very quick to shoot down reports like this of late, if for no other reason than the fact it’s not coming directly from their PR. We will see how much traction this gets inside their circles, but typically, silence from Sega will say all that needs to be said. I take this with a grain of salt. But I think Brad Bird would be great for a Sonic Movie.

I'm mostly a fan of only the SatAM/Archie canon so unless this were based on that(which I doubt) I would be only curious at best. I mean, I still like the other Sonic canon's they're just not nearly as good nor do they get me as nearly excited as a SatAM/Archie thing.

Ever since its initial announcement a few months back, there’s been no real word on what’s going on with the upcoming Sonic movie. All that’s known so far is that the movie will not be based on the Boom universe and that one of the screenwriters is a fan of the franchise – two pieces of news that could be well received by fans considering the… less than stellar launch of the two video game titles last week.

Van Robichaux, one of the aforementioned writers of the upcoming movie by Sony Pictures (and a member of our very own SSMB!), provided a little update via his Facebook regarding the current status of the movie. Obviously he will be under some strict embargos at this point, but some info is better than none, right?

So from the looks of it, we won’t be seeing much on the news front for a little while – so these small tidbits will have to do until sometime next year! But as you likely know, the 25th anniversary of the franchise is dawning on us come 2016… in the meantime, you can read up on all the press release information in our original article here.

Takashi Iizuka Supervising Sonic Movie

Movie Still A Go

The restructure of SEGA has led some to question whether the upcoming Sonic movie is still in production. That questioning can now be put to rest.

A fan had a Facebook conversation with Takashi Iizuka. Although the discussion was brief one important detail was confirmed: Iizuka is supervising the film.

No further details were provided but the news does provide answers for the curious who wanted to know more about what is happening.

Sonic Boom is meant to branch away from the classic/legacy Sonic. Our plan is to go forward with both the modern Sonic and the legacy Sonic, but the Sonic Team will handle the legacy side of things in Japan. For us, the Western initiatives will tie into the toys, merchandising animation – movies potentially even. We’re branching out into the more upbeat adventure style theme for Sonic Boom.
