Hey everybody! It's been a while!
I got up to date on everything regarding Sonic Boom, and my overall opinion of it is positive. I'll admit that I was rather bewildered by the character redesigns at first. I was fine with Tails and Amy, but I didn't understand the point of giving Sonic a scarf and sports tape. I was definitely uncomfortable with Knuckles's redesign, but I'll get to that.
However, as time passed, I grew to appreciate Sonic's new redesign. I think the sports tape goes well with his hyperactive personality, and the scarf should compliment his sense of adventure. I must also applaud the idea of not making all of Sonic's quills the same length.
As for Knuckles, however, he shouldn't have been made larger. I can understand that the character designers wanted Knuckles to look strong and powerful, but there has to have been a better way to reflect that. Just because a character isn't large doesn't mean that the character can't have super strength. For example, I don't think Superman is the largest guy in fictional media; in terms of height, he's at Doomsday's chest, and the Incredible Hulk, Bane, and Solomon Grundy are definitely larger than him. And yet Superman could bench-press the entire Earth if he wanted to!
Also, just like what Nattala fears, I'm afraid that Knuckles will become an all brawns and no brains character. I'm tired of the whole, "Knuckles is a buffoon and got tricked by Eggman again" thing. That running gag has lost its charm, assuming it had any to begin with, and Knuckles should be a clever character as well as a strong one. Remember his creative traps in Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
As for Amy, she was written poorly in Sonic Generations, and I'm afraid that will happen in Sonic Boom as well. I'm glad that she's a more competent fighter now, and but I hope they don't make her the obnoxious Sonic fan girl. Video game wise, I don't think Amy has been written poorly until Sonic Generations was released. Before then, although she did chase Sonic around, it's not like that's all she did. I could go on about this, but that's for another thread.
From what I've seen of Sonic and Tails, I don't have any concerns. In the Sonic Boom cartoon trailer, Sonic was his own wise-cracking self. Although I found the Egghead pun a little corny, I enjoyed the witty dialogue regarding the mis-named "Burn Bot" as well as the action sequence that followed. Sonic and Tails collaborate with one another in a very similar way to the video games. My interest is piqued as to what will become of Tails at the end of that trailer. I'm really glad that my two favorites are getting great treatment from the writers.
Apparently, the show will focus more on comedy than on serious story-telling. Maybe this would have bugged me two years ago, but now I'm open to a light-hearted comedy staring my favorite video game character. I know plenty of Sonic fans will disagree with me on this one, but I believe it's a matter of what fans like the most about Sonic. Some will prefer the adventure, others the action, others the comedy, others the story, others the characters, and so on. That's not to say it's not nice to have a good story, but, over the years, I've gravitated toward the characters; as long as the characters are well written, chances are that I'll like Sonic Boom.
Also, I love the CG animation in the show. At first, I was uneasy about the use of CG. That's not because I hate CG or anything like that (I enjoyed Beware the Batman), but I just wasn't sure if the cheaper CG of TV shows today would allow for the lively facial expressions of the Sonic characters. However, I can tell that the makers put forth the effort to make their show look great, and now I'm glad that it's CG animated, because the way it was done really bring the Sonic universe to life.
The environments look great! I love the open canyon that Sonic fought Burn Bot in, and, going by some of the concept art I've seen, I'm positive that there are more great locations to see in Sonic Boom.
Overall, Sonic Boom looks to be the Sonic cartoon I've been waiting for. I'm open to Sonic Boom being my favorite Sonic cartoon to date, and I can tell that the creators care about making a good show.
I look forward to discussing further opinions on Sonic Boom here. Have a great day!
