That may be an issue since most hardly take Sonic seriously anymore. Sega was weary of Sonic's popularity in a more serious spotlight and tried modeling the games after it. But look where it got them: Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, ect. With failures like these, it's no wonder why Sega's taking a more comical approach to their franchise.
At least the Archie comics are still taking themselves seriously.
I think it's largely because Sonic's 'serious' turns have a tendency to be rather pretentious, reverting the series to unfitting gimmicks popular during their creation and often skewing or demoting Sonic and other well established concepts in order for them to work.
Even without that though, I think there is some suspension to disbelief to how much drama and 'maturity' you can put into a cartoon franchise like Sonic. I'm not saying the series has to be completely one note and wacky, but I think a media trying to make a franchise about a blue hedgehog chasing an egg shaped scientist a completely dark and serious epic is a lost cause.
SatAm worked better because there was some valid moderation in it all, failing to go the full-on 'grimdark' approach some other examples do and keeping some amount of boundaries and whimsy to keep things even, though even then it did feel like it was playing itself as more deep than it really was at times (we already have a thread discussing it's glaringly shallow points). Archie for the longest time was SatAm without any of this moderation, and I felt, even when not pretentious, it was rather dull and subduing what made the franchise fun, while SatAm, even at the occasional fail of executing it's more majestic elements, could still at least be a fun little cartoon.
Then again this is being made by the guys of Friendship Is Magic, a show that proved that you can still give lots of depth and character to light hearted scenarios.
