    Sega World Sydney Sally Sightings!

Postby SonikkuForever on April 5th, 2011, 9:18 pm

Hello, everybody! I’m the same SonikkuForever that discovered those Sega World puppets a while back, and I’m back with even more Sega World related goodies to share, specifically on Sally Acorn, and the true extent of Sega World’s fondness for her. While searching the internet for all things Sega World Sydney, I gradually came across more and more pieces of evidence that prove that Sega World really was a Sally fan’s dream come true. Besides appearing in several shows, Sally also appeared on posters and brochures for Sega World, and had an unprecedented amount of merchandise sold there. It’s time for a Sally-spotting safari! Let’s start with the architecture of the park.

    Image

Look closely at that plastic wall decoration above the ticket window. The character that’s farthest to the right is Sally!

Here’s two pictures of the rather famous outdoor Sonic and Sally statue, plus a picture of a similar, but almost unknown, indoor version. I wouldn't mind having a miniature version of that...

    Image

Now, I’ll move on to Sally’s theater appearances. I know everyone’s already seen the Sally puppet, but I’m posting it here anyways for completion’s sake. Sally was a main character in the show and had several lines in the songs.

    Image

After many long searches, I finally found a picture of the Sally costume character that performed in the Sonic Live in Sydney Show. Costumes of Sonic, Sally, Tails, and Robotnik existed, and when they weren’t performing, would occasionally wander the park to meet and greet guests. Sally actually doesn’t look half bad.

    Image

Now for the part that will make all the merch-hogs drool. It’s Sally merchandise time! I’ll bet you didn’t know that Sega World operated an online gift shop for a short period of time. You could order any Sega World merchandise, and they’d ship it to you, even if you didn’t live in Australia! The following list came from the archived version of that site (with the exception of the cup at the bottom). Now, we know exactly what exists and how much it originally sold for. Sega World loved to promote their mascot characters equally, so the items in the following list feature Sally in a group of other characters. I only posted the ones that have either been confirmed or are extremely likely to have included Sally. There are probably more items out there, but because many of the pictures no longer exist, I don’t know if some of the more vague items included Sally or not.

      Sally Time Zone Card

There was a variant of this that didn't have the Sega World website address or the word "Sally" on the bottom.

WOW!! I never would have guessed that Sally had her own stationery, cups, and magnets! I’ve never heard of the Sally plush handbag/backpack either, although I do admit that I find the idea of using Sally as a handbag a little odd. Now that we know what Sally merchandise exists, the only remaining question is where on Mobius it all went!

And now, because you’ve been such good little Freedom Fighters, I’ll give you some official Sega World Sally artwork. I ripped these from the archived Sega World website and the park’s brochure. Enjoy!

This one was from the online store page. Someone forgot to color in the area above Sally’s eye.

    Image

Another one from the Sega World website. That’s a fairly rare Sally pose.

    Image

Here’s some colorful, character-filled Sega World logos. The "blue-armed Sonic" error was commonly made by Sega World Sydney.

    Image

    Image

And now, the pièce de résistance:

    Image

Thank you for joining me on my virtual Sega World Sally tour. Enjoy the artwork!

Very Awesome!! So much Sally! And some things I've never seen or heard of before!

(Although I do feel the need to point out that many of the merchandise pictures can already be found here at SMS in our information section http://saturdaymorningsonic.com/information/ and some of those photos - the hat, everything denim - were taken by me!)

PorpoiseMuffins, looks like you might need to update the info section soon!

And while we're on the topic of that, I want to point out that the Sally mask in that section, while very nice, is not officially licensed. It was a custom commission. Proof's here:

I know the contents of the park were auctioned off after it closed... I wonder who got the oversized Son/Sal statues? Or perhaps Sega retained them. In any case, this little collection is awesome. I want... most of it. :sonicdrool:

Thanks for compiling all of this, SonikkuForever. Some of those images are new to me. In fact, I think this whole post would make a good feature for the site. Let me know if you'd be interested in working on that, Sonikku.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the mask. I'll take that down since the page is supposed to be for official merch only.

I'm sorry, but that mask is literally terrifying. Someone should make a slasher film where the killer wears something like it, that creeps me out way more than a William Shatner or goalie mask. Seriously. If I was a filmmaker, I'd do that.

Agreed. That would scare the kids, not entertain them!

As much as I love Sally, that mask is going to give me nightmares. Even Robotnik would be scared of that mask.

I'd be happy to. My specialties are Sega World Sydney and obscure merchandise, so if you need anyone to write about those, I'm the one to ask.

Here's a picture of a very rare Sally Acorn pencil topper. This was actually from the United States, obtained from a gashapon machine at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. Other than books and the occasional pog, this is currently one of the only known Sally items from the United States. I believe the original owner sold this on Ebay a while back for tons of money.

Actually, it doesn't say the mask was commissioned, it says it was bought on eBay, which I know it was because I had been watching that auction at the time. The auction never said where the mask originally came from.

I am wondering though, the picture of the denim Sally dress...I took that picture when I was selling that dress on eBay, but then lost the photo...how did you find it and do you have a larger size copy of it? If so, can you send it to me?

I would addopt that big Sally figure without hesitating... :) At least is not roting under the rain or ground to reuse the fiberglass. (Anyways, a perfect rendition of Sally in 3D, quite a feat)

Other than the body of the person wearing it, I honestly don't see what's so freaky about the Sally mask in and of itself. The full Sally costume is also pretty decent, making the unforgivably bad quality of the puppet from the show all the more hard to understand; they got it right in felt once, why couldn't they do it again?
