New Sonic Prototype Found Based on SatAM

Postby Seriously Funny on May 16th, 2007, 9:20 pm

Not sure if this has been brought up yet, but I'll give it a shot. In an interview SEGA-16 held with Peter Morawiec (a former designer of SEGA Technical Institute), he shares a small video of a Sonic game prototype that was based on SatAM! Check it out for yourself:

    http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php ... 20Morawiec

Scroll to the bottom, and click on the Sonic link to download the video.

This seems pretty cool, although the title screen wasn't very impressive, and it seemed a little slow for a Sonic game. But still, I would love to play an official game based on Sonic SatAM!

    Discuss!

Wow, very cool find. This is probably related to Sonic Mars. Either way, it is definitely newsworthy. It's a very worthwhile, informative interview, as well.

Its really hard to judge a game with only 2 minutes of footage focused on one level. Its just a theory, but I believe the game wouldve comprised of different stages utilizes different skills. For example, this is to test your stealth, and maybe another one for speed. I dont know, the graphics are impressive for the era, especially the detailed expressions on Sonic. Plus it wouldve been the first Sonic game where he actually grabs onto ledges predating Mario in his 64 bit adventure. Speaking of Mario, do you think there was a stage select where you can pick your freedom fighter ala Mario 2? That would've been cool. Anyway, thats an awesome discovery. I honestly thought the only thing that existed was the script, but I guess that shows you that anything SatAM can still be out there. Its like uncovering the lost relic that Sega has been hidding. Nah, they wouldnt be that devious, would they :nervous:

Well, he did do that in Sonic Spinball. Does that count?

Yep, unreleased Sonic game, must have been Sonic mars. Nice find!

Something I don't understand : 1993 is the date showed at the end of the credits, is it when Mr. Morawied began to work on this demo, or is it when he began to work with SEGA?

The hedgehog on the title wasn't very good however his sprite in the game was very detailed and had several frames.
That game could have bring new and interesting ideas to the genre of Sonic games ,Sonic in the US was a celebrity so as the Genesis and SEGA.
It was good seeing that swatbots and Sally at the end of the demo;when Sonic has to hide from enemies is a nice touch and variation but high speed levels should have been the predominat thing when you would have played the hedgehog.I wonder if SOA in terms of speed, could have being able to create something similar to Sonic Team....

It may seem slow, and the title page a bit bland, but I still think this was perhaps in one of it's early stage of developments. The finished product would be more likely much better than what we saw. I was excited with joy when I found Sally near the end of the 2 min video, and it would of been awesome if they had the selection like Super Mario Bros. 2 (I wonder why they dropped this in later Mario games). Of course, you should always be able to pick your character no matter the situation rather than the game forcing you to play a character you may not like much (ala Antoine anyone?). I was very disappointed Mr. Morawied was never able to finish this and that SOJ pretty much threw this could of been SatAm game in the dust. Yugi Naka tends to have a nack for only liking what the Japanese think is good, not the way the westeners portray Sonic as with his Freedom Fighter friends. I always preferred our version of Sonic to Japan's, and I always preferred our model of Robotnik over the bumbling fool Eggman. SOJ never seems to have good communication with SOA, and soon after I realized a lot of SOA's ideas were thrown down the drain, I hated SOJ ever since.

Well, I sorda diagree with you. Yuji Naka created Sonic the Hedgehog and he probably felt protective of his character when creative liberties were delivered. Since its a complete departure from the regular Sonic games, I wouldnt blame him for being cautious since the franchise was doing well in the early 90s and probably felt this game would rock the boat. However, I agree that the last good game that SoJ created was Sonic CD. I guess Mr Naka shouldve at least give the SatAM concept a change before completly dispelling it.

I wouldn't really mind if it came out. Sonic Spinball and Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine were released but weren't considered by SOJ or Naka, and since there were at least a few thousand watching SatAm back in the day it couldn't of hurt to try to release a game based on the cartoon series to see how well it would of turned out. Maybe it would of danked in sales at the end but at least it was an effort to see our favorite SatAm/Archie characters on a videogame where they actually do something.

Actually that game doesn't look all that interesting. I mean, its like the crappy camera of Sonic 3D blast, mixed in with some moves that would serve no actual purpose in the gameplay.

If you look at the demo for Sonic Spinball on the same page, it looks very little like the final product, and the title screen is nothing like the final one. I'm sure that the title screen here was just a placeholder.

I agree. I would hope that Sonic's speed would be showcased in some fashion more than we see in the demo.

Whatever it was exactly that caused the title to get canned, I doubt that it was directly related to the inclusion of the Freedom Fighters in it.

The main focus was Sonic, and it would of been a nice touch to see the FFs come to life. Ah, one can only dream!
