    Tails' absence in Sonic Underground

Postby DaddlerTheDalek on April 3rd, 2016, 9:59 am

I'm sure I wasn't the only kid and Sonic fan who was confused that Tails didn't appear in Sonic Underground, not even as a small minor character. By the time when Knuckles made his debut in a Sonic animated series. I thought Tails would appear sometime later in that show but it didn't happen. What did you think back when and What do you think now?

It is a strange omission - I don't recall his absence being big on my mind through when I was little.

SU on the whole is a bit weird. Tails might've been too hard to write in as a regular when there's already three siblings as main characters.

I did think it was weird that Tails was left out for new characters. The lack of Snively, Sally, and the Freedom Fighters confused me at the time, though in hindsight, I can kind of see why they were excluded. They weren't in the games after all. But Tails? He'd been in every show up to that point, as well as afterwards.

It was also odd that considering they threw every other character out the window, Knuckles showed up. However, what I found truly bizarre in ways that approach the surreality that is Mr. Bungle's debut album, was that Athair, a really obscure Mike Gallagher character who appeared only in the comics, somehow found his way onto this show:

So, DiC makes another series that's essentially SatAM with bizarre musical numbers added, but they leave out Sally and the Freedom Fighters? Then they adapt Knuckles from the games, but leave out Tails and Amy? And to top it all off, Athair is cherry-picked to be in the show? I mean, nothing against Athair, but to quote Raphael in TMNT 1990, "Who comes up with this stuff?"

From what I've gathered, "Underground" was originally produced in French. And in the French dub of the storyarc, Knuckles' great-grandfather was never named. But when the show was brought over to the US, they gave him the name Athair to keep it consistent with the established American canon.

False. Athair was called Arthur in the French version, certainly because Athair wouldn't sound good in french (let's not forget they renamed Knuckles "Castagne" too)

Initially, I actually bought what LogiTeeka said because it made a lot of sense. But I guess I should have known that sense went out the window as soon as we began discussing Sonic Underground. :P It is really bizarre to note that they were aware of the comics (hence Athair,) the games, (hence Knuckles,) and even the other cartoons (hence Uncle Chuck, the re-use of SatAM backgrounds, etc) and yet they still decided to go off on such a strange direction.
