    Sonic Boom premiere

Postby LogiTeeka on November 8th, 2014, 10:23 pm

Hey, it's me again. Thing's have been a bit boring around here lately, so I thought I'd spruce it up here.

Anyway, earlier today, I got a chance to watch the premiere of the new "Sonic Boom" show on Cartoon Network. And it was good. Not great, but still pretty good.

The first episode was mixed at best; which is typical for a pilot episode. There were some good scenes between Sonic and Tails and the action scenes were nicely done, but most of the jokes felt flat and the pacing was kinda odd. Overall, not a terrible episode, but it could've been better.

Thankfully, the second episode was a major improvement. The pacing was better, the plot was more engaging, and the jokes were funnier. Had it not been for this episode, I probably wouldn't be as invested with the series as I currently am.

I guess the biggest surprise for me was seeing some soul back in the characters. While still a jokester, Sonic shows more emotion and feels much more human than before; showing general concern for his friends and taking heavy responsibility for their safety. After a series of lackluster games that played it insultingly safe by having little-to-no character development, this was a much-welcomed change.

Overall, it may not be as engaging as SatAM or "Underground", but it's much better than AoStH and "Sonic X" in my opinion. I'd recommend giving it a watch. Who knows? You may like it too. :)

I also tuned in to Sonic Boom last Saturday. I'm not used to waking up at 7 AM, but I was so excited to watch Sonic Boom that I didn't care!

What I watched was comedy gold! There were a ton of moments that put a grin on my face for the entirety of the two episodes including
    Spoiler: show
Knuckles Jr., Sonic getting corrected on when to say whoever, and Amy singing and juggling, Eggman keeping Sonic and Tails from getting rest, Sticks failing to pronounce unabliterable, Sticks kicking Sonic to wake him up, Amy giving psychology lectures, and so much more!
    .

I feared for how Amy Rose would get portrayed in Sonic Boom. I wasn't sure if she would be the snotty brat who fixated on Sonic like in Sonic X. Fortunately, I can toss those worries out the window; this is the best portrayal of Amy Rose ever! Not only does she manage to be funny, she is also a strong character who can fend for herself.

The voice acting is also spectacular! Roger Craig Smith gives a phenomenal performance as Sonic! Smith's performance helps make the already funny jokes even more funny. Tails' voice actress is great as well; she does a great job of making Tails sound like a little boy without making him obnoxious like in past portrayals (Sonic Heroes had a questionable Tails voice). Amy doesn't have that awful Minnie-mouse voice she had in Sonic Generations, so that's also a plus! Knuckles' laid-back coolness makes his remarks hilarious, especially when he tried to recruit Sonic as his sidekick. I understand how some could find Sticks's voice annoying, but I personally don't mind it.

The first episode did a great job of showing the brotherly bond that Sonic and Tails have, something Sonic X, for the most part, failed to do.
    Spoiler: show
Sonic and Tails shared a well-illustrated action scene at the beginning of the episode, and Sonic was showed great concern for Tails's condition after Burn Bot crashed his place. Sonic may have seemed like a jerk when he fired Tails, but it was obvious that Sonic really didn't want to do it.

I could go on, but there were so many great moments in Sonic Boom's first two episodes that I could be here for a while typing them all. I definitely recommend Sonic Boom to anybody who enjoys cartoon comedies.

Ive just watched it through unofficial sources (mainly as its not available here for another year apparently  ) and I...surprisingly liked it. Its not SatAM but its infinitely better than all the other Sonic showss made. Definately top 2.

After watching the first 2 episodes I think they actually got a lot of the stuff right, Amy is a tricky one but they done a good job without changing her too much from canon. Sonic isnt overbearing (he actually reminds me of Marty McFly in Back to the future  ) while Eggman is still a star in a different way ("evil ham" - in more ways than one!). Only Sticks seems out of place - they could have rolled up that with Amy's personality, but then again Amy would be a real psycho! It would be better to have one level-headed female as well as Amy and/or Sticks. So I suppose you cant have everything. Plus the voice acting is good for a change!

I think, comparing Boom and SatAM is like the Command and Conquer series in games - The tiberium stories, like SatAM are dark and serious while Boom is like Red Alert - more relaxed and lighthearted (ironic as Tim Curry was in Red Alert 3 but nvm). Both are (or started off being) good at what they do its just apart from a few shared features they are their own thing.

Just embrace the fact that Boom is the first decent Sonic cartoon since SatAm - it wont happen again for another 20 years.

That's a good comparison, actually  I agree.

Aside from Sticks, the new character, I think the show's pretty snappily written. I didn't go in expecting another SatAM but rather just some irreverent, tongue-in-cheek humour that shows a little self-awareness, and that's what we got. It does fine.

Well, this show looks like nothing special to me. Not as terrible as I feared, however.

Sonic Boom is fun. Sticks is nuts & I like it. Amy is sympathetic. Tails reminds me of Jimmy Neutron. Sonic is just Sonic. Knuckles is funny & Dr. Eggman completely steals the show. :)

Given his backstory, I've always imagined Knuckles as the strong, stoic type. Think Zelgadis from The Slayers, only more awesome because of an incredible bias in favor of the Sonic universe. I don't know if I can accept him as some form of comic relief.
It’s okay. I’m with the band.

Now that I've seen eight episodes of Sonic Boom, I feel I can give a better opinion of the cartoon.

I still believe the show is great. Sonic Boom captures everything about the Sonic characters that make them so likable to me. Sonic himself isn't just some moron who spouts a bunch of one-liners. In fact, I feel like Sonic has been annoyed by others more than others have been annoyed by him. Sonic still has that classic snark and banter, but it's not overplayed to the point where I want to smack him.

I also love how the show captures the brotherly bond and banter between Sonic and Tails, especially in "The Sidekick" and "Double Doomsday." Sonic and Tails, along with Dr. Eggman, are my favorite characters in the Sonic universe, so I was disappointed that the Sonic cartoons, aside from the OVA and AoStH, failed to capture the bond between them. Fortunately, Sonic Boom finally addressed this problem for me.

As I've already stated, Amy is better than ever in Sonic Boom, and, even eight episodes in, this statement still holds true for me. I'm glad she has a personality now, and no longer fixates on Sonic. Probably my least favorite characters in media are those who fixate on other characters to the point where it's impossible for me to relate to them. It's the main reason why I don't like Harley Quinn from Batman as much as others do. I'm glad that the new Amy is funny, intelligent, and capable of fending for herself in battle.

Sticks the Badger is also likable. I can understand why others would be turned off by her high-pitched voice, but I still find her funny for the most part. I cracked up in "Translate This" where she got super paranoid by the translator robot and attacked Knuckles when she thought he insulted her. Her inability to adjust to society also makes for some funny moments. However, I did find it pretty lame when she got mad at her shadow.

I'm personally torn on Knuckles. On one hand, think his buffoonish behavior helped make "Eggheads" a funny episode ("I'm yelling words!", "I'm an evil mastermind of average intelligence"). One the other hand, however, I can completely understand why some Knuckles fans dislike Sonic Boom for its portrayal of the character. Knuckles was super strong and clever up until Sonic Heroes, and then Sonic Team seemed to forget the difference between gullible and stupid. I don't think Knuckles should be an all brawn and no brains character. I'm fine with him not being the brightest bulb in the box, but at least make him capable of reading! Still, there's something about his laid-back personality that's likable to me, and at least he's not a complete hard-head like he is in Sonic X. I hope we get a great Knuckles episode in the near future. An episode that lets him shine. I would personally love to see him put his incredible strength to great use in an episode. For example, have Knuckles throw a boulder at one of Eggman's giant robots and single-handedly destroy it!

Overall, despite its flaws, Sonic Boom is the Sonic cartoon that I've been wanting since 2012! I hope the negative reception of the video game doesn't affect the success of the cartoon!

People said the same thing about films like "Fantasia" and "The Dark Knight", and they ended up liking them in the end.

I'd still recommend watching it, just to get an opinion.

I've been following sonic boom for some time now. For the most part the show is funny. It's not A+ material but they put in a LOT of references to other things.

Now tails has a new girlfriend named Zooey( tails' new crush episode.) For a long time I've felt tails needed someone. The whole Cosmo girlfriend that dies... Upset a lot of people. This event cas caused a stur among fans.

All 52 episodes of Sonic Boom's first season have aired in the U.S. now. Overall, it's a good cartoon comedy series. It's not the definitive version of Sonic the Hedgehog in my opinion, but any show that has laugh-out-loud moments in 90% of the episodes has got to be doing something right!

I love that we got to see
    Spoiler: show
    Metal Sonic and Shadow
, and I especially enjoyed the episode where Orbot and Cubot got transported into a retro video game. It's awesome that the Konami Code was referenced.

I am disappointment by one thing however. Remember when I applauded Sonic Boom for not portraying Amy as a Sonic the Hedgehog fan girl? Now an episode, "Battle of the Boy Bands",
    Spoiler: show
portrays Amy as a Justin Beiber fan girl in a very stereotypical fashion. :( I mean no offense to any possible Justin Beiber fans on here, but this episode just rubbed me the wrong way. With that said, however, even this episode had funny moments ("Knuckles. Stop tearing pages out of the calendar.").

I still believe Sonic Boom to be an enjoyable comedy series. Although I have developed a negative opinion on Knuckles's portrayal as the series went on (he's just awful in "Counter Productive"), I can always rest assured that Sonic Boom is a separate continuity from the video games. Would I like to see a more action-adventure based Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series in the future? Absolutely! For now, however, I'm happy with Sonic Boom's comedic shenanigans.

I hate how on one end they make tails out to be stupid as well sometimes.but I like his whole look.

Naughty dawg made the character designs. I just wish the show had a better opening.
