It's My Opinion, too! A even more Sinister Robotnik or explore Bunnies past or an older getting Tails!

I loved SA2! I hope Sega will make SA3!

Dunno if this was considered, but for examples:
Look at Harry Potter. It started out as this "Aw, what a cute story about little kids. It's so sweet and touching." Then it got dark and not so cute. Then it got darker and people got concerned. Then it went pure black and became something else entirely. Hence, example of the evolution of characters and situations.

Also (because this is my fallback Perfect Series example), there were things on Angel and later on BtVS that NEVER would have been deemed appropriate for Season 1 Buffy fans. Maturing audience = maturing content.

Does mature honestly mean better? I don't think Sonic should exactly try to become darker and edgier in order to adapt to a fanbase that is getting older as there will always be more younger kids coming in. Whether it stays mostly child friendly or gets a tad darker, isn't it all really just personal preference? This is just something that's come to mind when I once heard a fan ragging on Sonic Colors because of it's more campy story, or another just flat out saying that Sonic is better because of it's darker story lines. Do we really want to force SEGA to make darker story lines just for the sake of it being dark? I mean, when SA2 was being made I don't think they set out to make a darker story, they just made a story, and that's why I liked it. It didn't force itself, unlike Shadow the Hedgehog, which did.

You have a point here I'll admit.

I personally like a more mature Sonic storyline since it worked very well in Sonic Satam.

In fact, even Sega's two best Sonic games, SA1 and SA2 have a more mature storyline than most of the other games.

That should prove right there it can work.

A big Sonic fan even made a fan video of what his vision of Sonic would be. And to say the least, I was very impressed with his concept.

Such as this one for example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Subo-FlRpLM

I have to disagree here. I think Sega was trying to make a darker storyline when making SA2. I mean, think about it. They brought in G.U.N, Sega's version of the US military, an ultimate life form hedgehog bent on destroying those who killed her friend Maria. Even Eggman wanting to blow up Sonic in a space capsule.

That's pretty dark if you ask me.

But yea, Shadow the Hedgehog unfortunately took that concept and went too far.

While I thought it was cool Shadow could use guns to shoot his enemies, that really is not his style of fighting. Not to mention Black Doom and his Alien race was a big rip off of the Xorda from the Archie comic book.

Personally, I think the Sonic series should be separated into two universes. One for those who prefer him to be zany and lighthearted, and those who want to see him involved with a deeper storyline that involves war and emotion.

That way I believe, would please the fanbase more.

    This

Actually, I don't know about two universes, but multiple. There always has been multiple continuities and universes, so why not continue with that? It's something I've always liked about Sonic (and is also why as much as I dislike AoStH, I've never thought it shouldn't it exist)

I feel so torn on this. On the one hand, I totally agree, and it's why I think fan-works are often more mature and/or adult, and why I think that's fine even if I'd rather not see the majority of it. At the same time, when it's the official storyline, it can be great for the fans to have the story grow with them, but it doesn't help bring a lot of new fans into whatever the current storyline is since it's always being targeted toward the same group. I think whatever it is need to still be appealing to the original fans as they age, but I don't know that that necessarily means making it more mature. I'd say keeping it true to what it is fans like in the first place is more important, which may or may not mean more mature. I look at MLP: FiM as an example of that...FiM is pretty true to what fans of the original liked (mostly), it's liked by a lot of older fans, in some sense the point of the stories are more mature and meaningful, but it's not intended for an older audience. So it's appealing to the older fans (like me) but also to new, younger fans.

    LOL

AOSTH definitely is a series Sonic fans either loves or hates. I won't deny it is indeed a very crazy series to look at.

I personally like it just because it can be good for a few laughs when you need them, but that's just me.

    Well said.

While I agree a series should bring in new fans, it shouldn't at the same time do it at the expense of the old ones. I mean after all, it was the old ones that made it popular in the first place.

As for mature themes, I would agree that there has to be a limit to it. It can't be so dark and gory that it makes fans cringe to look at. The key word in addressing this issue is definitely balance.

I think that's one reason why Satam is my favorite Sonic series, because it gave you mature elements, but also had light hearted ones as well. It was pretty good at balancing itself I thought.

Granted, Satam wasn't perfect in this department, but for what is was, It's passable.

I think the one series that pulled off the mature storyline and elements perfectly was by far the animated Batman series of the early 90's.

I would have loved to have seen some of those writers using their creative thought process in writing some Sonic Satam stories. They probably would do a really solid job.

Just because something has darker themes doesn't mean it was trying to be dark. As something of a writer myself I find myself putting characters through some really dark stuff despite my humor sprinkled everywhere to keep things light hearted. Things get really dark and really sad at times though. Am I trying to make a darker, edgier story? Or is that just my style of story telling? With SA2 I feel as though it might have moreso just been someones story that they wanted to be told in the game (Whoever wrote it). But with Shadow, they were obviously trying hard.

But let's say SEGA was trying to make things darker, then let me re-phrase my statement. They weren't trying as hard. It wasn't their main focal point and I didn't feel like I was being beaten over the head with it. But then fans (I'm gonna assume it was mostly us Westerners) praised it up and down for it's darker story, and SEGA took it too far.

I do that as well at times, but I keep it to a minimum.

When I'm writing an intense scene, I don't add that many jokes in it, ruining the drama of the moment.

    Yea, that's probably what happened.

Having darker and more mature themes is definitely a balancing act when writing a story within it.

Nonono, not at the same time. It's like, dark moments at times but mostly it's action and witty banter. When a character dies I'm not gonna make it funny.

Man this topic is still going on? Pretty cool.

Hmm, what to add... well the idea of having Todd McFarlane doing a SatAM cartoon has just entered my head and man I'd love to see how he'd handle the roboticization process, and hell you know he'd design a badass Robotnik.

Anyone else with me on this? Enough with stuff on content and "mature levels," let's talk about how this thing would actually look.

Justin Summerville wrote:Darker themes could work as long as it's consistent with the rest of the series. Anime tends to do that a lot, and it often works - at least as far as I know. Perhaps part of the key means of a successful story with dark themes depends on not being condescending to its audience. Take the cartoon Teen Titans or Pixar's Up. Stuff like that juggles things in a balanced manner, and they come across as deeper products without resorting to over-the-top pretentiousness.

This. I think Sonic X in particular suffered with it's darker moments because they were such mood whiplash with the other extremely wacky concepts of the show, it made it a bit uncomfortable to switch between this and dark sci fi drama. The games do this as well, but at least usually not within the same title.

SatAm worked better because it sort of kept a consistant concept and setup which made the darker and whimsical elements work better, it didn't switch between candy colored cartoon worlds and grimdark corrupted anime cities erratically (though I admit the introduction of magic elements like dragons pushed it a tiny bit).

SatAm's problems were more from not knowing when to upkeep the dramatic or comical tone of the show at the right time, or not being able to utilize either to the neccessary extent, eg. Robotnik being a blundering unrestrained sadist that somehow tricked King Acorn for such a long period of time, or the team making passive one liners and stalling for slapstick when one of their team mates was captive (especially since they didn't get there on time as a result).
