I haven't read all of the responses, but my own is this:

I watched the origial MLP years ago and it was one-dimentionally girly. I was a small girl at the time so it pretty much fitted the bill for me, but really - girliness was all it had, this idea that no matter what, being cute was the most important thing.

This modern version has more for it. I have to admit I don't remember the specific ponies from the old version (except for LIckety-Split, who was a younger pony than most of the others, half-foal, really, and Spike) but these ones have more to them. While they are all very cute and very pretty, there's more going on, and that means the show has more to commend it beyond its cuteness.

I'm liking the effect Fluttershy is having on fans of the show. She's painfully introverted but there is much about her manner that rings psychologically true: she feels more comfortable with her friends and notably, managed to cope with a big monster. Because that's how she feels she's dealing with life all the time. She actually became quite nonchalant to the others in the aftermath of this, as if she felt vindicated in them seeing a helpful embodiment of her strengths.

I find something a little bit dislikable in Rainbow Dash, and I like the risk the producers made in this. She's impatient, shallow and unecessarily suspicious of others. But you know what? She's got every right to be that, and it's up to the watcher to see something better in her. She isn't condemned or exactly forgiven, the reader is credited with the intelligence to decide for themselves.

I have to admit I loved Twilight's first approach to the other fillies in the first episode. I've met people who were trying to be 'official and controlled' as a way of avoiding being truly warm and friendly to others, and the way she did that came across as both true and - well done MLP producers - I saw the vulnerability underlying it. She wasn't simply presented as being 'the best pony' for being clever.

I'm not sure how rambly the above sounds - sorry if it's coming across as a load of rubbish.

I'm not part of the FiM "cult" either, let alone even keep up with the show LOL, but it's alot more cooler than the 80s MLP. I grew up watching the 80s one and what i remember from my 7-year old memories is that i was thinking :glare: 'this $**t's for babies, i'm gonna go watch Teddy Ruxpin' LOL! I wish the 80s MLP was written like FiM, it would've been more awesome!

 Heck yea, Adventure Time is awesome! But not as awesome as (in her mordecai impression) "Regular Show, OOOOOOOOH!!"

Thing is, the old MLP was made in an era when feminism was more at the fore of our society's awareness, so the main point of the show as to be feminine, pure and simple. Having TV shows for girls was still reasonably novel back then: we were coming out of a time when only men and boys were seen as worth considering as a demographic. I think this is generally true but if I had more time on my hands I'd read into the history of feminism to qualify that more.

These days - the time in which MLP FiM has been made - the trend is for personal growth, therefore the show reflects that.

Yea i agree with u velvet. I remember seeing alot of 80 cartoons leaning more towards girl audiences, like it was encouraging girls and young women to be strong and that we can do things just like boys...AKA "girl power" :eyeroll: LOL. Rainbow Brite, CareBears, Pound Puppies...and Jem...OMG besides Teddy Ruxpin, Jem was my show back then...and i had the doll too! She so rocked, she was way better than barbie.

Wow, you guys seem to be pretty harsh on a show you admit you don't even remember.

Yeah, the old show had some pointless fluff episodes...I'd say maybe half the series, but the point was not to be girly and feminine at all costs. There were some stories about identity and being yourself, there was a good amount of action and fantasy, there were lessons, there were characters with distinct and believable personalities, and they weren't all "girly"...much of what FiM is is exactly what I always liked about the original, which is why I like FiM. In some ways FiM does it better because it's much more deliberate and focused, but it so clearly got its inspiration from the original series, that to dismiss the original as "for babies" is kind of insulting to the series' own history, never mind to fans who actually wanted something like FiM because of the strengths of what came before it.

(And personally, I still prefer Rescue from Midnight Castle over FiM's first two episodes, which are based on it)

*secret smile* We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are. To be fair, there was a lot of expectation on me to be 'the fluffy little girl'. Perhaps that's where my bias came from.

I'm kinda harsh on it because it isn't all that memorable. Like Nella in N'Chick's MLP review, I remember the stories I made up with my ponies more than I remember the show.

 Not harsh, but more like stating the opinion i had when i was 7 LOL. And i agree with you rozax, i used to collect MLP toys and played all sorts of stageplays and movie reenactments with them. Haha i even reenacted the entire EWOK: Battle For Endor movie with them  LMAO. In case you don't know what that movie is, it's a spin-off of Star Wars and based on the Ewoks. It wasn't really a big success, but i thought it was cute anyway LOL

Don't get me wrong, oldskool MLP is alright plus i grew up in the 80s so i like my 80s cartoons. But if i was to choose one it would be the new one

Yay! I know that one! I don't remember much of it, but I know that I liked it as a kid.

I forgot of this topic, now actually I seen a episode of G1 w/out chucking up or worse (according general consensus) "The prince and the Ponies" crudely translating the Spanish title, it was bleh at the beginning, but the main plot I consider quite acceptable to FiM's standards.

Apparently the Ponies, living in a loft of south Manhattan, got invitations to something at a palace (s1e3 The Ticketmaster anybody?), so, they go to Canter... the palace (resembling Versailles) :robotnikinnocent: with some baby twins (Plum and Pumpkin Cake?) unable to be left sitting with nopony , so, some spoiled royal brat naps them to use them as playthings, Then the big Ponies go "Desperado" to rescue them, but like in "man on the iron mask" they wind on the dungeon were they find Link from "Legend of Zelda" in a cell, winds up gannon AKA "The mean Queen" ended being a mean Queen, so jailed Link to nap the power in Hiru-- Unicornia. So Ponies go Chuck Norris and save the day... Recrown the crowned head, yadda yadda Bang!

Well, I see some potential to a episode of FiM reusing parts of this old episode (mainly the Mane 6 going "Butt kicking extravaganza")
    Be extraordinary!

This is actually how Lauren Faust wrote episodes for the show

I watched a couple of episodes of FiM on youtube yesterday and from what I saw, it's surprisingly really good. The characters here were very rich in personality and likability, and the animation and writing are just all around terrific in quality. This might just wind up becoming another favorite cartoon show of mine.

Yet I'm gonna have a pretty hard time confessing to other people in real life the fact that I happen to like a cartoon show that has the My Little Pony label on it. On the other hand, I guess a fair amount of "bronies" do once they're hooked. Do they?

Yes, it's a weird thing to "confess". But it's also tough keeping something you really like a secret. I've told a few people that I watch FiM, but only people who I know already respect me and won't give me a hard time about it.
